Take a journey along a transcontinental railroad first spiked down by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1881 through Montana and North Dakota.

This historic line helped settle the American west through the rugged badlands and rolling prairies. It connects the Yellowstone River town of Glendive in eastern Montana with the Missouri River town of Mandan, North Dakota, near Bismarck.

In the two-hundred miles of what BNSF calls its Dickinson Subdivision, you will see a variety of trains from short locals to long unit trains lugging over 250 cars.

Two of the biggest commodities are coal shipped from the Powder River Basin and grain loaded at numerous facilities around the state. Along with the unit trains, mixed manifests roll between rail hubs scattered across the BNSF system.
