In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, the Union Pacific Steam Program embarked on a coast to coast tour with the largest operating steam locomotive in the world, Big Boy number 4014 leading a special train to select cities across America.
7idea Productions covered the eastbound leg of the west-coast tour in the spring of 2026, as the steam special traveled nearly 1,200 miles from Sacramento, California to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
We followed Big Boy through the rain-soaked Feather River Canyon, across the remote desert of Nevada, the Great Salt Lake of Utah, over the Wasatch Mountains, and across the windswept plains of Wyoming.
Along with the 4014, the historic train included two heritage diesels: UP1616 honoring President Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Railway Act in 1862, creating the Union Pacific, and the America 250 locomotive numbered the UP1776.
